Instructions

Things you’ll need:

1 or 2 packs of weft hair or tracks
Hair sewing needle, preferably the one with a curve (It can be found at any hair store)

Comb
Scissors
Hair clips or bobby pins

Step 1

Wash and dry your own hair. This is to rid the hair of oils and products that will cause build-up and it also helps the style last longer.

Step 2

Start with braids like these and end up with a full head weave. Braid hair horizontally around the head in cornrows adding extension hair for thickness and durability. If you want a full-head weave you braid all of the hair however if you just want a partial weave for thickness then clip or bobby pin an inch of hair out in the front. This will be used to cover any tracks later. If you have very thin hair it is recommended that you add as much bulk to your own hair as possible but still keep the braids flat to the scalp. This will make it easier to sew-in the wefts and give a more natural illusion.

Step 3

Depending on the style that you want to wear, the hair will be sewn-in accordingly. For example, if you want bangs the wefts have to be applied in a circular motion around the head. While some can do this alone it will be better to have someone assist at this point so the hair is even all around.

Step 4

There are so many textures available so don't be afraid to be bold. Thread the needle as you would a regular sewing needle and fasten the end with a knot. The weft is now also threaded at the very end of the track and then sewn through the braid as you would a button on a shirt. This can be continued around the whole head and make sure it's tight but not too tight. The amount of tracks depends solely on how thick you want the hair to fall.

Step 5

Once all the hair has been sewn in, check for any spots that may seem empty or bald-like. Nothing is worse than being able to see right through the hair. Sew-in additional hair in these areas. If you have a partial weave then comb hair that was left out and push back over tracks for a natural look.

Hair may be clumped together in wefts or small bunches. In such wefts, hair is tied together or grouped together with threads. These wefts can be created by hand or on a machine, but as hand-tying can raise the cost of production of such wefts, machine wefted extensions are much more popular. Wefts can be fine, medium or heavy, but the most commonly used extensions are medium wefts. However, despite the added cost, some people prefer handmade wefts as these are lighter and also do not tend to shed as much as machine-made wefts.

Another important component of this technique is the use of bulk hair. This refers to hair that is not in the form of a weft but is in fact loose hair. Bulk hair is ideally used for stand bonding and braiding techniques of hair weaving. In the case of what is known as the basic cord tracking technique of hair weaving, thin cords are attached onto the scalp and the bond is further strengthened by stitching threads onto these cords. What is hair weaving?

It’s the science of weaving or braiding human or synthetic hair to the roots of existing, healthy hair so that it grows along with natural hair, thus giving the impression of a thick growth. It’s also called hair integration or hair intensification. It’s a procedure appropriate for people with thinning hair. It’s not something that requires a hospital visit; it’s usually done in salons as a temporary procedure.

How does it work?

Two or three shafts of hair natural or synthetic are woven into the root area. Some of the natural hair is woven or braided together to act as an anchor, to which the add-on tufts are sewn, woven, knitted or glued. The extensions have to be repositioned every five or six weeks as the natural hair grows out.

Sounds Complex.

It is. Apart from the sheer tedium of repeated ‘surgeries’, the procedure stresses the existing hair as well. Also, keeping the scalp and hair clean is a problem, as vigorous washing could loosen the new hair. The American Hair Loss Council advises the procedure only for people with plenty of healthy hair, and that too, for periods not longer than a few weeks. A patch test is essential to ensure the person undergoing the procedure is not allergic to any of the adhesives or implants used.

A non-surgical implant is the dressed-up term now used for a simple procedure that has been upgraded over the years. The expansions are then re-grafted in front of the head, so the hair appears to grow naturally from there. This calls for two surgical procedures, one at the time of implantation and the other for re-grafting.

Are there any drawbacks to the surgical procedures?

There may be swelling, bruising or mild pain inhibiting normal activity for a couple of days after the procedure. There may also be numbness on the back of the neck, from where a strip of skin is removed. Also, it’s important to remember that individual hair types and characteristics- such as wavy or curly hair- affect the results.
